Brighton Students in the News!
News from 2009-2010: Brighton High School students participated in the ArtPeace Shakedown 2010. This annual county-wide event showcased the talents of high school students with the exhibition running from May 7 through May 15, 2010 at the Village Gate, 274 North Goodman Street in Rochester. Approximately 75 students from Brighton participated; the work represented ceramics, photography, drawing, painting, printmaking, and collage. Alex Holm, a BHS senior, sold five of his silkscreened series on heroes. The Brighton High School Jazz Band will open the Rochester International Jazz Festival on Friday, June 11th at 4:30 p.m. The Twelve Corners Middle School Jazz Band played at the Lilac Festival at Highland Park on Friday, May 21st at 1:00 p.m. On May 5, 2010, Brighton Central School District was named a 'Best Community for Music Education' by the National Association of Music Merchants. This is as a result of NAMM's 11th annual survey, which acknowledges schools and districts across the United States for their commitment to and support of music education in schools. Congratulations to Melissa Mashner, flutist, for being the winner of three awards. Melissa is an 11th grader at Brighton High School and is the winner of the following competitions: Finger Lakes Symphony Young Artist Competition performing with the Finger Lakes Symphony Orchestra on April 10th @ 7 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Palmyra Rochester Philharmonic League Young Artist Competition Greer Award ~ cash award Special Award ~ playing a solo with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra in the Summer of 2010 Two Brighton High School seniors received the Hanson Certificate of Merit Award. Taylor Gawinski Stern and Mark Krasner along with seven other area students were recognized with this special award from the Rochester Piano Teachers' Guild on Sunday, March 14, 2010 at Nazareth College's Wilmot Hall. The opening reception will be on May 7, 2010 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. with the exhibition running from May 7 through May 15, 2010 at the Village Gate, 274 North Goodman Street in Rochester. Two Brighton High School students attended the New York State Band Directors Association this year with their teacher, Mr. Mike Struzik. Rebecca Taylor and Eric Stabnau attended the 30th Annual NYSBDA Symposium at the Doubletree Hotel Syracuse and Holiday Inn Carrier Circle in Syracuse, New York on March 5 - March 7, 2010. The winner of a Concerto Competition was Melissa Mashner, flutist. Melissa is an 11th grader at Brighton High School and performed a piece by Hue on February 8, 2010 with the Penfield Symphony Orchestra. On Monday, February 1, 2010 at 7:30 p.m., two Brighton High School students were part of Almost, Maine, an exciting collaboration with Geva Theatre Center and eight other high schools! "Getting It Back" was the scene that 9th grade actors Hannah Pisher and Aaron Salzman were in. Other Brighton students that participated in this great opportunity (The Stage Door Project) were Ahra Gho (11th grade) and Lianna Mendelson (10th grade). Ahra worked on costumes as the design student and Lianna shadowed the Stage Manager. Please visit Geva's website to find out more information about the show. Brighton High School students participated in an art contest at the Brighton Memorial Library. Go Postal! was open to 6 - 12 graders in Brighton and is on display through January 31, 2010. Galaxy 2009 received a First Place with Special Merit award from the American Scholastic Press Association. Each school yearbook and magazine is scored on a point system and is awarded a first, second or third place in its classification. Those school publications with special and outstanding design and content may receive a First Place with Special Merit. Galaxy is proud to have received this distinction this year. Brighton High School art students were entered in the Student Awards for Graphic Arts, sponsored by the Rochester Club of Printing House Craftsman. This competition was in conjunction with Print Week, the annual event that celebrates excellence in the craft of printing by Rochester professional printers. Each student was invited to attend the Wayzgoose/Print Week banquet on January 16, 2010 at the Student Alumni Building at the Rochester Institute of Technology where all the student and commercial entries were displayed. Brighton High School art teachers participated in an exhibit at the Nazareth College Art Center Gallery. Each teacher along with a student had their work hang side-by-side in this exhibit entitled Shared Spaces. The show opened on January 15, 2010 at the Nazareth College Art Center Gallery and ran through February 6, 2010. The participants were Mrs. Debra Burger with Harlowe Root, Mrs. Ann Crerand with Haley Milner and Mr. Jed Kunz with Zoe Clark. Congratulations to thirteen Brighton students that are members of the Rochester Philharmonic Youth Orchestra: Leela Chockalingam, Yuhuan Fu, Connie Jiang, Aya Kaufmann, Eleanor Krasner, Melissa Mashner, Samantha Merrill, Andrew Mullen, Isabella Padron, Lillian Rosen, Emily Sui, Nina Wang and Howard Yeh. Melissa Mashner, an eleventh grader at Brighton High School, is the winner of the high school category of the Thirteenth Annual Flute Fair 2009 held by the Rochester Flute Association at Nazareth College. The winners recital was held at Pittsford High School and Melissa was selected to play at a master class. The editors of Galaxy attended the ESSPA (Empire State Scholastic Press Association) Conference on Friday, October 23, 2009 at Syracuse University. They participated in workshops and seminars on leadership skills and design for art and literary magazines. The following honors were accepted for the 2009 edition of Galaxy:
Gold - overall magazine, Karis Schneider (layout) Silver - Arianna Mayer (layout), Bella Vishnevsky (cover design), Chelsea Wagner (cover design) Bronze - Karis Schneider (fiction), Samantha Gordon (photography), Kelsey Burritt (poetry) Honorable Mention - Rory Gillett (artwork/illustration), Daniel Gruber (photography), Amanda Klein (non-fiction), Arianna Mayer (artwork/illustration), Bella Vishnevsky (artwork/illustration) Galaxy received a Silver Medalist Certificate from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association for the 2009 issue of Galaxy magazine. The Galaxy editors attended the Empire State Scholastic Association at Syracuse University on October 23, 2009 and participated in critiques, workshops and the annual award ceremony. Congratulations to Karla Bradley, Sam Langmann, Christina Palis, Audrey Rosenberg and Rachel Winsberg for being members of the 2009-2010 Hochstein Youth Symphony Orchestra, the highest level youth orchestra in the Hochstein School of Music and Dance's five-tier youth orchestra program! This season there are 94 students from 28 different schools that come together every Saturday morning. Eighteen Brighton High School students from the AP Studio Art class were featured artists in an exhibit at the Rochester International Airport: David Chaves Lopez, Zoe Clark, Hanna Edizel, Marlee Finestone, Ahra Gho, Rory Gillett, Alexander Holm, Sam Horowitz, Aya Kaufmann, Callum Mc Cance, Matthew Menzies, Kurt Minges, Steven Naukam, Adelaide Palum, Michael Pisher, Amanda Stearns, Shuran Wu, Rebecca Zaretsky. Congratulations to twelve 7th grade band members for being accepted into the Hochstein Junior Wind Symphony! These Twelve Corners Middle School students will attend rehearsals during September and October to perform in a concert at the Hochstein School of Music and Dance on October 24, 2009: Anahata Batchu, Harry Bryant III, Alex Cohen, Catie Golini, Katherine Kasha, Ty Korfmacher, Levi Lorenzo, Sam Schacht, Gabrielle Stone, Mason Vodecek, Matthew Wolfe and Chloe Yang. Symphonic Band: Christina Palis and Yoni Zuckerman Symphony Orchestra: Connie Jiang, Samantha Merrill and Rachel Winsberg Two 10th grade Brighton High School students successfully completed the 2009 School of Choral Studies of the New York State Summer School of the Arts. Congratulations to Lianna Mendelson and Celeste Pellegrino for being selected from approximately seventy students statewide to participate in the School of Choral Studies. NYSSSA provided the opportunity for them to rehearse and sing under the direction of Dr. Daniel Bara, an acclaimed conductor and music educator. They received voice instruction, music theory and aural skills as well as electives of opera scenes, stagecraft and small ensembles. The program included a performance at the Chautauqua Institution and ended in a choral concert at the Rosch Recital Hall on the SUNY Fredonia campus.
