Theater Program
The theater program at Brighton has experienced much growth in the past couple of years. At the high school level we offer course work in both acting and directing as electives. Students explore what is Truth in Acting and the Community of Theater. The curricular program is closely integrated with ELA standards and sequentially builds on aspects of the use of movement, voice, and choice to inform students' performances. There are active drama clubs in both the middle school and the high school. We currently produce one musical each year at the middle school level. At the high school level there are a vast number of performances that take place each year for students to participate in. During the past few years the students have taken part in classic masterpieces such as Shakespeare's Twelfth Night and the comedy, On The Razzle. A highlight of every year is the major musical production. Last year students in Brighton produced Noises Off, Les Miserables, and A Midsummer's Night Dream. A unique opportunity for High School students to experiment with their creative talents is The 24-Hour Plays. The 24-Hour Plays is a creation of Steven Engel, the former Theatre Director at Brighton High School. In a little over 24 hours, the students write, audition for, direct and perform their own theatre one acts. Many of our Brighton students are also active participants in community and summer theater groups. Several of these young people go on to pursue professional theater careers. NYSTEA, The New York State Theatre Education Association, is an organization whose members are educators and artists. The Annual High School Theatre Conference, which is sponsored by NYSTEA every January, is well attended by Brighton High School students thanks to the encouragement of our teachers and directors. This year the conference will be held in Callicoon, New York at The Villa Roma on January 8, 9 and 10, 2010. More than 600 students from across New York State participate each year and this will be Brighton High School's third year to attend the conference.
