New Policies for 2024-2025 School Year

According to the Commissioner of Education, school districts are not required to transport students to multiple locations.  It is up to the discretion of each district—based on available resources and safety concerns—if transportation to multiple locations will be granted.  Traditionally, Brighton has accommodated requests for alternate stop locations and allowed parents to:

  • request multiple pick-up and drop off locations for their students (even within a given weekday),  and
  • submit bus passes at grades K-8 to change drop-off locations on a daily basis.

Due to safety concerns, the persistent nation-wide driver shortage, and limited resources, the Brighton Transportation Department will be scaling back on the services it can provide in terms of transporting to multiple locations.

We CAN accommodate requests for alternate locations on different days under the following conditions

  • All stop locations are within the Brighton Central School District’s service area
  • The transportation arrangements are consistent and not subject to change week to week
  • Any changes will require a new form to be filled out and 3 to 5 school days for the new arrangements to be put in place.
  • Transportation arrangements are not finalized until communicated in writing (email) by the Transportation Department

For example:  the following transportation request would be granted.

Tuesday

Starting in the fall of the 2024-2025 school year, the Transportation Department can no longer accommodate requests to transport students to alternate locations within a given day’s morning or afternoon windows

We CANNOT accommodate requests for alternate locations within a given day’s morning or afternoon windows or schedules that alternate from week to week.

For example, the following request WOULD NOT be accommodated.

  • Parents (divorced or separated) may request that their children have multiple pick-up and drop-off locations using the Dual Custody Form.   Transportation may accommodate requests to different “home” locations on different days based on a consistent schedule provided by the family.  Alternating weeks or other schedule variations are not possible based on safety concerns and will not be accepted.\

We understand that plans change.  Below are procedures of how to request changes to previously communicated transportation plans.

CHANGING FROM BUS TRANSPORTATION TO PARENT PICKUP

Parents may request a change from bus transportation to parent pick up by:

  • Calling the Main Office-
  • Filling out a CRPS Dismissal Pass

ONE DAY ONLY CHANGE FROM PARENT PICKUP TO BUS TRANSPORATION

Students are only allowed on a school bus if there is a designated bus stop associated with that student on the driver’s route sheet.   To request bus transportation parents must fill out the “BCSD Transportation Form Fall 2024” which can be found AT THE TRANSPORTATION WEBSITE.

If a parent would like to request a change from parent pick up to bus transportation the parent must contact the Main Office.   Main Office staff will communicate to the driver and the transportation department that the student will ride the bus.

If the change is more permanent in nature, a new BCSD Transportation Form Fall 2024 must be submitted.

BUS PASSES WILL BE ACCEPTED FOR THE FIVE EARLY RELEASE DAYS

  • FRIDAY   NOVEMBER 8
  • FRIDAY   NOVEMBER 15
  • FRIDAY   DECEMBER 6
  • FRIDAY   DECEMBER 13
  • FRIDAY   MAY 23

We will accommodate bus transportation to the nearest existing stop on our buses.  Requests for home stops will not be accommodated unless the already exist on the driver’s route sheet.

EMERGENCY CHANGE TO A REGULARLY SCHEDULED BUS STOP

The Transportation Department will no longer accommodate same-day bus change requests.

However, we will always be committed to working directly with families that are having an unforeseen hardship on any given day.   If you need assistance, please contact the Transportation Department [(585) 242-5100, ext 5806] directly.   No changes can be made by leaving a voicemail or email  You must speak directly with a representative from the Transportation Department.

Requests for a one-time bus change will be considered under EMERGENCY SITUATIONS ONLY and must be received by 11 am.   To ensure the safety of our students, adequate time is required to make changes and to communicate revised plans to all parties.  Requests received after 11 am may not be accommodated.

  • After speaking to a Transportation Department representative, you will be directed to submit the request, in writing, to the Transportation Department at bcsd_transportation@bcsd.org .
  • In the subject line of the email please type: “BUS PASS REQUEST, attention Mike Maloy.   We receive many e-mails and it is important for us to see those for bus pass requests.
  • Requests must be received BEFORE 11 am, and must be acknowledged and approved by the Director of Student Operations, Mike Maloy, or his designee.
  • You will receive communication to verify that the request has been accommodated.
  •  IF YOU DO NOT RECIEVE A REPLY, THEN THEN REQUEST IS NOT YET APPROVED.
