Committees on Special Education

Each school district in New York State must have a Committee on Special Education and a Committee on Pre-School Special Education. Students and pre-schoolers who may have disabilities are referred to a Committee for evaluation. Building level Committees on Special Education conduct annual reviews of students who are receiving special education services.

The committees have specified memberships which include the school psychologist, a parent of a child being reviewed, a general education teacher, and a special education teacher.

The Committee on Special Education determines the student’s disabilities, the appropriate long and short-term goals, and the appropriate services.
